MMA incorporates primarily Shidokan Karate, Muy Thai, and American Kickboxing for standing/striking and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for grappling. She is currently working with other LGBT martial artists to assemble a series of free self defense classes in Chicago specifically for our community- keep up with her on Facebook stay in the loop about future classes
11:40am - 1pm
Lead by Artistic Associate Whitney Masters
Viewpoints is an acting technique that provides a vocabulary for movement and gesture. Anne Bogart and Tina Landau further developed choreographer Mary Overlie's Viewpoints into the system actors use now. There are the Time Viewpoints- Tempo, Duration, Kinesthetic Response and Repetition and the Space Viewpoints- Shape, Gesture, Architecture, Spatial Relationship and Topography.
Whitney absolutely loves Viewpoints as a way to connect with the subconscious of a character, but also as a tool for working out mental blocks and fully living inside your body. She has used Viewpoints primarily in her training and professional life to develop new works, warm up for shows and create blocking patterns. This session is open everyone- new or experienced. We will get familiar each Viewpoint and then experiment with them in guided Viewpoints flow.
MOVEMENT TO MUSIC
1:10pm - 2:30pm
Lead by Matt Pierce
MOVEMENT TO MUSIC is a particular discipline of collaborative abstract movement exploration practiced and evolved at DePaul University’s Theatre School in which the actor practices responding intuitively to impulses internal and external. No experience or training is necessary—just bring yourself and your sweat to the session.
Matt Pierce is a Chicago-based actor and director with an MFA in Acting from DePaul who has directed large-ensemble classical productions featuring devised movement and music sequences at the University of Northampton, England, and most recently “Robin Hood and Marian” for Strawdog Theatre. He is also the host of “Jesus Jones Jeopardy,” a music trivia gameshow podcast.
Nothing Without a Company is a 501c3 non-profit theatre company that believes everyone should be able to take classes such as these for FREE. Donations are always accepted. All donations will go directly to the Chicago Parks District. This is just the first of many classes we will be offering in 2017!
