“Nothing Without a Company has a winner on its hands, thanks to a strong script, thoughtful direction and acting that’s almost too real.”

Bobby Pin Girls tells the story of Ana and Bree as they are forced to do some rapid bonding over the course of a wild night. Ana is an uptight actress struggling to convince herself to stick with a show she not-so-secretly despises while navigating mixed signals from her director. Visual artist Bree attempts to boost her new roomie’s self-confidence while dealing with her impulsive and reckless ex reentering her life. Will the toxic people in their lives bust up this burgeoning friendship or will the girls learn to embrace their evolving identities?

This play contains strong language, drug use, and mentions of self-harm. Flashing lights will also be used in this production.

What’s most fun and surprising here is the comedy, from verbal jabs to physical, that punctuates the heavy scenes. Hutchings and Modaff in particular offer raw performances that also manage not to take themselves too seriously.

Under Ben Kaye’s non-intrusive direction, Grace Hutchings and Emilie Modaff replicate the vocal mannerisms of earnest post-grads to the smallest inflection. All these elements make for a portrait of youthful lifestyles in 2017 so authentic as to deserve enshrinement in a time capsule.
